The Italic peninsula has always had a characteristic which led all its history until today: since prehistoric times, it has always been a crossroads of people, languages, cultures, ways of life, so rich and diversified which perhaps have no equals in the rest of the world. Thus, even those who had to be its indigenous peoples, the Italics, in fact they were already a mix of prehistoric people from distant lands.
This variety of cultures was favored by the physical characteristics of the territory:
- landscape and climate change rapidly over short distances: from coasts to plains, from hills to mountains, and therefore from temperate to cold climates;
- strategic geographical position in the middle of the western Mediterranean basin, veritable real bridge between East and West;
- coasts (about 8000 km) which since ancient times facilitated landings because they were rich in landings and natural ports;
- abundance of water, which favored the formation of the first settlements, villages and later cities.
